We are going to jump ahead in our reading for this devotional to chapter 3 of 1 Chronicles…. Just so you aren’t wondering where this truth was at in your Bible Reading.
Reminders are a good thing, because we can be forgetful. I am notorious for forgetting things, and have tried to develop a system to remember important things... like taking down the trash. Our trash people come very early on Friday (which is my day off, and a great day to take it easy in the morning). So I am supposed to take the trash down Thursday... but that can be an easy thing to forget. To remedy this I have a reminder on my calendar on my phone that goes off at 8:45, 8:50, 8:55, and 9:00 to remind me (yes I need that many reminders! It’s pathetic isn’t it...?). With these reminders in place though, I never forget the trash... actually the only way I could forget is gross negligence.
Solomon, in setting up the pillars in front of the temple, gave them names: Jachin and Boaz. These names weren’t chosen at random, but have meaning and were intended to remind all of Israel of the goodness and strength of God. Jachin means, God shall establish. Boaz means, in it is strength. What a reminder that God had allowed Israel to even exist and He has the strength to sustain her!
There would come many times in the future of Israel that they would need to be reminded of the strength of their God. When enemies threatened, and when pestilence prevailed, they needed to be reminded that God was still strong and able.
God has given us very clear reminders in the church with our ordinances. He gave us two of them: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The intention of both of these is remembrance… they are to act like a testimony that points the believer to remember the Gospel. The Lord’s supper helps us remember His death, and baptism helps us remember his death and resurrection. We need these reminders.
What reminders do you need in your life? Maybe it is an alarm to actually be faithful in your devotions. Maybe it is a piece of paper with challenging scriptures and quotes taped to your bathroom mirror you see every morning to help get your mind right for the day.
Maybe it is hiding a verse in your heart by memorizing it to help when Satan tempts to remind you to live for God. My point is this... if you are like me, you can be forgetful, so put things in place to force yourself to remember.

Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
