Sin is absolutely devastating to any life. The effects are deep and have major consequences. A casual examination of those who are anti-God and fully engrossed in sin, shows some depressing results.
Antidepressants, suicide, substance abuse, jumping from one codependent relationship to another... the pursuit of peace and happiness apart from God... vanity. On the outside a facade that life is great and yet it is crumbling on the inside. A life with unfulfilled purpose, lost from God’s intent for them to glorify Him alone.
Those in the limelight of the social world are the pinnacle of ‘happiness’ many think. “If I could just have their fame, fortune, good looks, spouse, and adoration I would be so happy.” The sad reality is that these are some of the emptiest lives out there. The celebrity realm is littered with sin and humanism and has never brought any true peace and happiness.
Simple question... “Why do Christians want to be like them?”
Maybe not a movie star, but those in sin... why do you want to be like our society that is becoming increasingly post-Christian?
1 Chronicles 5:25 has to be one of the saddest verses in all the Chronicles, “And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.”
They desired to be like those whom God continually destroyed... right before their very eyes! They knew the consequences of sin and the inability it had to bring any peace or joy, and yet they still went hard after it.
Today, purposefully “turn your eyes upon Jesus... look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” Desire Christlikeness, not to be like those engrossed in sin.
Quit envying your coworker who is steeped in immorality. Stop lusting after the ‘freedom’ a family member has. Don’t desire a life apart from God... it may look appealing, but just beyond the surface is vanity and emptiness.
