Where does true happiness and joy come from? If you just breezed over that question (like I usually do) go back and honestly consider and answer it. We could come up with a ton of answers of what may produce happiness, but if we are honest there is only one thing that consistently produces lasting joy, happiness, contentment, and peace.... being in fellowship with God by being right with God. It may be an oversimplified answer, but basically that is what it boils down to.
2 Chronicles 7:10 is awesome, “And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their tents, glad and merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David, and to Solomon, and to Israel his people.” You do realize that this was after the dedication of the temple... which went on for over a week! The people had to be sent home, they were so full and blessed from worship and praise of the Lord.
I think most of us know this truth... but unfortunately turn to just about any and everything else to make us feel a superficial happiness. Usually it is a temporary happiness high that leaves us no more truly blessed and full of joy than we were before. These counterfeit happiness highs, only feign the real thing. There is no joy like the joy Jesus gives.
What is your joy based on? Things? People? Health? Finances? If you say the Lord alone and then find your whole day ruined because the hot water heater was out and you took a cold shower, your basis of happiness has been identified... ouch. Are you honestly content with Jesus and draw your completeness from Him?
