“To know the will of God is the greatest knowledge! To do the will of God is the greatest achievement.” – George W. Truett
“The safest place to be is in the center of God’s will.” – Corrie Ten Boom
One of the greatest things I want for my life is the presence of God. I am not talking about anything mystic, spooky, or unbiblical. To know that I am right with the Lord, and his blessing and approval are upon is something I desire for my life. Not only my life, no, I desire it for every child of God. It is my prayer that you would be wholly submitted to God, walking in the Spirit, and being led of the Spirit.
Galatians five presents the wonderful dynamic of God’s leadership and our need to follow. If you are saved, God is trying to lead you and guide you. He provided the Holy Spirit who prompts the believer’s conscience to refrain from wrong and ensue right. As a child of God, you have the wonderful blessing of being led of the Spirit. Our problem is not that we are not led; our problem is that we do not follow. Galatians 5:25 says, “If we live in the Spirit, let us ALSO WALK in the Spirit.” If you don’t have the blessing and presence of God on your life, it is not God’s lack of leadership it is your lack of followship.
In Numbers nine we get a detailed description of the leadership of God for Israel. A pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night was a vivid visual that God was leading them. The organization that has been established by God for Israel is amazing. The tabernacle breakdown and setup by the Levites, the way in which the tribes are to camp and what order they travel in, the trumpets that signal different progressions, and the leadership of God over it all with His presence. God is the ultimate leadership over Israel, and His presence is undeniable.
It must have been a comforting thing to see the manifestation of God’s presence in the form of a cloud or fire. Just imagine being led by a tornado looking cloud that at night is wrapped in a blaze of fire! They knew God wanted them to go or stay because of this cloud fire. They knew what God’s purposes and plans were because it was visibly and clearly laid out in front of them.
The reality is that we as Christians today have just as sure of leadership, if not better, than Israel had. This leadership is in the form of the Holy Spirit which is our comforter and guide in this Christian life. Through the reading of God’s Word, the Holy Spirit illuminates truth and leads us in the right direction. This works for the universal general will of God (that which applies to everyone) and the individual specific will of God (that which is unique to you alone).
Maybe you wish a cloud of fire would drop out of the sky and declare “GO HERE” or “STAY PUT”, but I assure you that God will make His will clear to you. It may be that today you are wrestling with some difficult decision and you are wondering which way God wants you to go. Christian, are you in the place of decision? Here are some encouraging truths about the will of God:
First, be where God wants you to be, and you will get where He wants you to go. Israel knew the next location because they were close enough to the cloud to see when it moved. Be what God has shown you to be today, and He will tell you when to move. Be faithful with your Bible reading, prayer, soul winning, church attendance, giving, ministries, and holy living… do the known will of God, and He will lead you to the specific will of God in His time.
Second, be patient, God isn’t going to work on your timetable. Israel didn’t know if they would be in a location for a day or a year, they simply had to trust God and be ready. Be willing to stay or go where and when He leads. Don’t get ahead of God or lag far behind, be right where God wants you to be and when He is ready to move He will make it clear.
Third, take comfort that God knows best. He will always do what is for His glory and your good, and that is a comforting reality. Never doubt God’s intentions even if they don’t make sense to you, just simply trust and obey.
