It can be easy to forget all that goes into making a organization, church, or nation work. We usually see the prominent pieces up front: CEO of a company, pastor of a church, president of a nation. These are indeed necessary and important roles, but their function only is possible because of all the ‘behind the scenes’ roles individuals take on.
We actually can say with absolute certainty that some of the “behind the scenes” jobs are more important than the “man up front” roles. This isn’t often a popular view because people like the praise and adoration that being in the limelight brings. Would our society collapse faster if we lost all movie stars or sanitation workers? Would civilization unravel faster if we lost the athletes or the farmers?
I love Memorial Day (which is just 18 days away), and I am mindful of the great many who paid the ultimate price for our freedom here in America. In appreciation, we can give them great honor. We may never know most of their names, but their ‘behind the scene’ labor and ultimately their sacrifice has done more than anyone or anything else to make this nation great! I love the day not for the barbecues or the day off, but for the opportunity to praise and say thank you to our fallen heroes.
In the New Testament Local Church, the same dynamic is in place. 1 Corinthians 12-14, would identify the ‘uncomely’ spiritual gifts and members of the body as the most necessary. In our body, the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys are ugly... real ugly, and yet you cannot make it without them. As beautiful as I think my lovely hair is (lol)... I can live without my locks! The behind the scenes jobs are the most important!
This is why 1 Corinthians 12:23 says, “And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.”
There are members of each local church that a vital, but often unseen. Necessary individuals that keep the church in function by using their spiritual gifts to the glory of God. They many never receive recognition here on this side of Glory, but great is their reward in Heaven.
Those who labored in the temple had various jobs... some were in the limelight and others were behind the scenes. If those behind the scenes didn’t do their job, the ability for God’s people to sacrifice and worship would not have been available.
Thousands of Levites were given the task to not only be priest, but caretakers of the temple. There were some jobs that just were not that “pretty”, and yet they were all very necessary.
Whatever God has given you to do... small or great... do it as unto the Lord with all your might. You are an important part of your church, and God placed you there to use your Spiritual Gift for His honor.
