We often sing the hymn ‘I surrender all’. “ALL to Jesus I surrender ALL to Him I freely give. I will ever love and trust Him. In His presence daily live. I surrender ALL, I surrender ALL. ALL to thee my blessed Savior, I surrender ALL.” We sing the words, utter them, or think on them, but are we really surrendered all the way? Does God really have all of us?
Ornan and David both understood surrendering all in the midst of tragedy. David’s pride was costing many their lives, but he humbled himself and repented of his wrong. To cause the death to cease altogether, sacrifice must be made. Ornan is willing to give everything to make this possible. David realizes it must cost him personally to really be sacrifice, and buys everything. Two men were willing to sacrifice to make things right with God.
Could you imagine Ornan, a man who was making a living threshing wheat, willing to give it all away? Without hesitation, Ornan was willing to give anything to the Lord and to stop the Angel from killing more people. Would you be willing to do this? If your house, land, and wealth were asked for of the Lord, would you be willing to say “take it” without any hesitation?
David was offered the property of Ornan for free, but this was not true surrender and sacrifice. David understood that his sacrifice had to cost him something… it couldn’t be free or easy. David paid Ornan the purchase price of the goods so that it cost him something. Surrender and sacrifice had to cost. It leads to the telling question, have you really sacrificed if it hasn’t cost you anything? The simple answer is, “no”.
True sacrifice must cost us something, and usually God ask a great deal from us. The Lord wants us to be fully surrendered and committed to Him, and thus He ask the rich young ruler to sell all his goods, He ask the fishers to leave their nets, and He did not rebuke Mary for breaking her box of ointment. God requires true surrender and real sacrifice… it has to cost.
What are you willing to do to be all God desires you to be? Are you willing to sacrifice ALL? Are you willing to be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable? Do you indeed surrender ALL or is it just a song you sing?
