My daughter doesn’t like spankings. Brooklyn is by far the most dramatic about getting disciplined. She had perfected the pouch lip… you know the one where the bottom lips sticks out about 10 miles. The hard part is, I hate spanking her. She is our sweet little girl, and it is hard to discipline her when she is already crying so much.
Just as with any of our other children, Brooklyn needs discipline to learn right and wrong, and to obey authority. Foolishness is indeed bound in the heart of a child, and the rod will drive it far from them.
The worst part about Brooklyn is that she will actually run away if she is due some discipline, because she knows it will hurt. The sad part is that I often have to discipline her more because of her running away and disobedience to come get a spanking. What a tragedy that more discipline has to be given because of a refusal to submit to loving chastisement.
I don’t want to spank her more, and she doesn’t want the extra spanking. Until she learns that obedience to disciple and correction are necessary, she will continue to get addition spankings. I love my daughter very much, and it grieves me that she can be so stubborn toward submission to discipline.
Jeremiah is told to show a very vivid picture of submission to Babylon, and ultimately to God’s discipline. He fashions yokes of wood, wears one, and sends others to leaders of other nations. They are told to submit to Babylon and accept it as God’s judgement.
A false prophet breaks the yoke from off Jeremiah and assures everyone that Babylon’s bondage is over. This was not the truth, and God tells Jeremiah to make the yoke again out of iron, so it will be unbreakable. Showing Babylonian rule was there to stay for some time.
If you know the rest of the story, Judah refuses to submit to Nebuchadnezzar and Jerusalem was devastated, people were killed, and the judgement happened anyway.
God chastens those He loves. If God is judging you, sometimes the best thing to do is submit to that judgement... “go ahead Lord, I deserve it, I acknowledge my sin”. Don’t try to run, that only leads to more trouble. Submit to judgement and fall in the loving arms of Jesus.
Maybe today, you need to just pause and tell the Lord, “give me a good one Lord, I deserve this spanking” instead of running. Refusing God’s loving chastisement only leads to more heartache and punishment.
