The timeless words of Scripture impact every age in new and fresh ways, and this is especially true of this passage of Scripture. At the time of it’s writing, Solomon knew the dangers of prostitutes and promiscuous women. For those 100 years ago, it was unholy sex in print and in clubs. For those 50 years ago, it was unholy sex on tape and in stores. The danger today is everywhere, as the internet has permeated every facet of our society. The wisdom of Solomon applies to every sexual temptation we face.
The struggle with sexual sin is a very real and present battle for many Christians. Maybe it is a struggle for you. I want to encourage you today that there is no sin to low or wretched that Christ cannot rescue you from and set you free by the power of His Grace. There is hope.
Solomon’s words give us a great warning about the dangers of the adulterous woman and unholy sex. Without pulling punches, Solomon gives us graphic details in Proverbs 5 and 6. In Proverbs 5, He explains clearly that the adulterous woman promises sweetness and smoothness (Vs. 3), but in reality, she is bitter and sharp (Vs. 4). Unholy sexual fulfillment will destroy your life. Solomon declares that she will claim your years, wealth, labor, and even your body!
In contrast, Solomon explains a wonderful truth, Godly sex is right and pleasant. He declares, “drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.”
The adulterous woman, clubs, magazines, websites, and the like promise enjoyment, pleasure, sweetness, and smoothness, but they actually are bitter, sharp, and destroy your life! Instead enjoy the woman God has given you! Let her smile, her personality, her body satisfy you… NOT ANOTHER! She is yours, and you are hers, so be satisfied with your sweet waters and enjoy them deeply and richly.
The temptation is everywhere today to look and lust, but God has called us to holiness and purity. If you struggle in the area of sexual purity, please, please, please, come to me and let’s get you moving in the right direction spiritually. There is a great book, “Finally Free” by Heath Lambert that is a must read.
I am a firm believer in accountability. You need measures in place to help you in your fight for purity. If you have struggled with purity, get some trusted Christian who can help keep you accountable.
Today, make a purposed choice to be pure sexually. If you are single, but committed to the Lord and pure. If you are married, be faithful to your spouse and drink deeply and fully in their love… not anothers.
