I love the power and versatility of the Word of God. For the child of God, it has more functions than we could probably name in one sitting. One such function is its ability to fight off sin.
“Weird”, is probably the expression given by others who might have seen me driving that day... I was in high school, and in a mental battle with temptation that day, and I had to pull out my most powerful tool in the fight, Scripture. Driving down the road, I began to quote what Scripture I had etched on my heart for such occasions as this. In just a short time the victory was won, because the power of Scripture was used!
Solomon gave us the key in Proverbs 7:1-5: My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart. Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman: That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.”
Recently, our children have started memorizing Scripture during our family devotion times (or as my kids call it, ‘votions). The verses I pick each week for them to learn have to do with areas they struggle with. We have learned verses about anger, using right words, spankings, and good character.
It is my desire that they will not only learn these verses, but hide them in their heart. One day when temptation comes, I pray these verses will surge back into their mind and be available in their time of need.
Scripture memory is not just for children though… it works for adults too! When is the last time you learned a new verse?
Scripture works in every area of temptation, fear, doubt, and more... not just lust.
What area do you struggle in? What is a temptation in your life? Memorize scripture and have your arsenal ready when Satan attacks.
