I used to love playing with magnifying glasses. Burning ants, catching things on fire, and other fun pyro antics usually is what I used my magnifying glass for. The true purpose of the magnifying glass is to magnify (deep I know). It brings things into focus that otherwise would be difficult or impossible to see.
My sons and I enjoy finding rare and unusual coins, and sometimes we have to use magnification to see specific details. To make this easier, I have a digital scope that can magnify a coin in high definition. Every detail becomes visible under this magnification, and it really takes the guess work out of identifying nuances in some coins.
As Christians we are called to magnify the LORD. We cannot make Him any bigger or small than He is, but we can bring Him into or out of focus to the World around us. We are supposed to act like an HD scope that brings out all the minute details of our God. We are supposed to be salt and light to a dark and tasteless world.
One of the things you have to admire about David is his consistent desire to make the name of the LORD look big. He had his stumbling points, but he earned the title “man after God’s own heart” due to his continual desire to exalt the name of the Lord. This is most clearly seen in his desire to build the temple. His stated purpose is to exalt the name of the Lord, for His name sake.
In your life today, I pray you will examine every decision, thought, and action with the thought, “does this make my God look big?” Is what I am doing making God look small or large in the eyes of the world?
Israel’s intention from her inception was to magnify the Lord so all other nations would understand that there is One True God. “And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel.” - Malachi 1:5. They failed more than they succeeded at this... but we have to admit, no one did it better than David.
Is God’s name magnified in your life? Do other’s “see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)? Today, choose actions and thoughts that make the name of the Lord look as big as He really is
