Wisdom is a choice. Lessons in life will be learned the easy way or the hard way, but they will be learned. For those who refuse to learn, lessons will be taught over and over again. It has wisely been said that, “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. We would be wise to learn from the wisdom of God’s Word and those who have learned it valuable truths before us.
In recent years, the outskirts of our yard have developed little stickers (or as my kids like to call them prickers). They are weird plants that lay flat to the ground, and are covered with tiny thorn looking stickers. Apparently, they develop in high traffic areas where the grass has been worn down. In our yard, they have started appearing along the path that leads to our little pool.
Although I have taken measures to remedy our yard of these “prickers”, they are not eradicated yet. To make the trip from our house to our pool has turned into a treacherous journey. Each of the kids have been given a pair of flip-flops that are supposed to stay by the back door and can be used to protect their feet from this treacherous journey. Unfortunately, time after time one of the kids will forget their shoes and get their feet covered in prickers.
Sometimes the kids will go the long way around to the pool, disobeying their father’s clear instructions to not step on or over the garden rows planted with green beans. Their laziness and stubbornness drives them to take moronic measures sometimes to avoid the pain of the prickers. If they would just use the shoes their loving parents have given them, and listen to the wisdom to wear them, they would be spared from so much pain.
See, when I was kid I used to go barefoot everywhere… and I mean everywhere! On more than one occasion I would get one or more large stickers in my feet. Their sharp barbs driven deeply into my tender flesh. With tears and pain, I would have to pull them out and feel the after effects for hours. Finally, I became wise to the fact that shoes protected my feet from these stickers.
My desire is to impart this helpful truth to my children and save them from some of the pain I endured at their age. It may be that they have to learn the lesson the hard way by continually getting stickers or prickers in their feet. The lesson is SO MUCH EASIER if we adhere to the advice given to us.
You will learn lessons in life, and it is much wiser to learn them the easy way. Solomon wants to impart wisdom to you, and more importantly God wants you to have wisdom. Listen to these truths and know wisdom and instruction…. Perceive the words of understanding… receive instruction… gain subtilty and discretion.
Today, take time and pray that God would give you wisdom, and then avail yourself to the perfect wisdom of God’s Word. You are going to learn some lessons in this life… why not learn them the easy way, from God’s Word?
