Children need to be taught like children, but eventually the child should become an adult.
Andrew is about to start 1st grade, Nate 3rd, and Brooklyn Pre-k, and all of them will be homeschooled. My office is adjacent to the room they used to do homeschool in, and I used to be able to make out what was going on during their school day. Every morning they would start out the same way... it was rather repetitive. They would say the pledge, they would sing the national anthem, they would quote scripture, they would say letter sounds... over and over and over again. The reason? Well repetition is a great teacher for children. They usually don’t grasp a concept the first time it is taught and have to be taught that same concept again and again.
At some point in life, there is an expectation that a concept should be learned the first time. I have had a few jobs, and with little exception they had expectations that I would and could do what they showed me on training day. Now the concept may need to be tweaked, but an employer would be upset if he had to show the new guy how to do his job every day for a month!
Many hail Isaiah 28:10-13 as a wonderful doctrinal concept, “line upon line, precept upon precept”. But, Isaiah and the people understood it in a very demeaning way.
A young child is taught like... well, a young child. Precepts, lines, truths, concepts and repeated over and over and then added to. There is nothing wrong with this if you are a child. But there comes a time when we should move to higher learning and concept grasping.
God was so disgusted with Israel because they wouldn’t grow up... that He was going to have to judge them to get their attention and teach them! They had the same message preached over and over and OVER again, and yet would not learn.
What alarms me is that we have so many Christians who ought not be taught like a child anymore. They have been saved 5, 10, 20, 30 years or more, and still need someone to give them a bottle of the Word of God. It is time to get on to the meat... it is time to enjoy a meal from you pastor, but feed YOURSELF daily the Word of God.
In this day, there are more outlets available to learn and study the Word of God than ever before... avail yourself to them. Learn the Word, Love the Word, Do the Word. It is time to grow up in Jesus.
Today, purpose to mature as a Christian and “grow up” to be able to start grasping deeper spiritual truths.
