My children try to take justice into their own hands sometimes, and it turns into a huge mess! Their sense of justice is selfish, and so they usually follow human nature. Human nature says, you took my eye, I will take your life. You took my tooth, I will take your head off. This is one reason God enacted the law eye for eye, tooth for tooth, to temper the human nature for revenge.
My children’s nature to exact extreme punishments upon their siblings makes it very hard for me to discipline the one that offended them. When Nate hits Brooklyn for breaking one of his toys it limits my ability to discipline Brooklyn like I should, and forces me to deal with the even more heinous behavior of Nate who hit her.
God keeps very good books. He is not confused or forgetful about who has done what, and who hasn’t done. God knows the wicked and God knows the righteous, and although the reward/punishment dynamic may seem skewed here on earth, God is not confused about it.
God will set all things right one day, and will reward the wicked for their wickedness, and the righteous for their righteousness. Don’t get bent out of shape if it seems the wicked prosper now… their day is coming. Don’t try to take justice into your own hands, but rather trust the Lord and be faithful.
No doubt Jeremiah wondered about the wicked nations that surrounded Israel. For years they had tempted Israel, hated Israel, and made war with them. Now Israel is being judged for their idolatry and stubborn hearts… all the while, these other nations seem unscathed.
Through Jeremiah prophecies are given about each of these wicked and God denying nations. They all are told that judgment is coming against them, and they will suffer for their hatred of God’s people. Egypt, Philista, Moab, and more are called out by name and told they will suffer wrong for their wrong doings.
If you ever feel we live in an unfair and unjust world, you are right. Never lose sight that one day will God will set everything right and will reward every man according to his works… whether good or evil. Continue to do right even if it seems there is no payoff right now, it is worth it.
