Promises are important things not to be easily or quickly broken. As a parent, I have learned that promises mean something to my children. If I say I am going to do something, they expect me to do it. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I don’t always come good on my promises. There has likely never been an individual in all of history (expect Christ) who has been able to keep all their promises perfectly.
The reality is that we are imperfect, and thus cannot perfectly keep our promises… no matter how good our intentions are. God on the other hand is perfect and limitless in His ability to keep every promise. He has never failed to keep one of His promises!
I love when God’s promises come to pass in very clear and tangible ways. One reason God causes such a harsh plague when David numbered the people was because of David’s pride in doing so. The numbering of the adults from 20 and up would prove there was a large population, and it appears there was originally a temptation to number everyone including children and infants.
David’s desire was unjust because it was haughty and motivated by “look what I did”. God has to remind David that this feat has nothing to do with his ability as king, but rather God’s ability to keep His promises. God had promised Abraham that He would make his descendants innumerable... like sand or stars.
1 Chronicles 27:23 says, “But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens.”
The blessing to walk away with from this passage is the reality that God made good on His promise to Abraham! The man who had no children, now has physical descendants that are beyond numbering.... like stars.
God has made some awesome promises in His Word. He can and will fulfill them in His way in His time. Trust Him. Just like that simple kids song… Every promise in the Book is mine, every chapter, every verse, every line… all are blessings of His love divine… every promise in the Book is mine.
