“Sometimes, the best way to help someone is just to be near them.” - Veronica Roth
With a child, nothing is more reassuring than when your father is there. A while back, Nate, my oldest son, kept running off while at Wal-Mart. I decided a little lesson was necessary, since he wasn’t listening to my command to “quit running off”. I let him run ahead, and then hid behind a center display when he wasn’t looking. It didn’t take too long, and Nate was frantically looking everywhere for me. My intention was not evil but good… I wanted him to know the feeling of being lost without really being lost. In the future, he will hopefully stay close when asked to.
Nate is like many of us, we act high and mighty when our Father is near, but we also take His presence for granted. Sometimes we run off without Him, and don’t care if He approves or disapproves of our actions, only to find ourselves royally freaking out when He is not there when we need Him.
God wanted the Children of Israel to know that He was not only with them, but leading them. He set a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night to lead them and be a constant reminder that He was with them. What a source of comfort and strength these very real signs must have been. Especially while crossing the Red Sea with Egypt nipping at their heels. And yet we find them by chapter 15 complaining about the water, and doubting God goodness and HIS VERY PRESENCE!
Isn’t it incredible that Israel could so quickly forget all the blessings of God, and how God had shown Himself mighty time and time again. He had delivered them from Egypt, He had set them free, He had split the Red Sea, He had placed the cloud and fire pillars AND yet they still doubted Him, WOW. It really is incredible when you think about it.
Before we get too harsh on the Israelites, we have an even more sure sign of God’s presence than they did. We have the Holy Spirit residing in our hearts, we have the Scriptures, we have the blessing of salvation. The reality of God’s continued presence in our life is added to further by the fact that we can go to God directly at any time! Wow.
How could we ever doubt His presence and goodness in our life. He wants to be near us, comfort us (that is why we have the comforter, the Holy Spirit). His love for you is boundless, and the evidence that He is near are limitless.
Today do not doubt the presence of God… He is with you no matter what you are going through. You read that right… whatever you are going through God knows, God cares, GOD IS NEAR. Don’t run from Him, run to Him.
