The song writer Rusty Goodman penned these words that are very familiar to many today: “Had it not been for a place called Mount Calvary, Had it not been for the old rugged cross, Had it not been for a man called Jesus, Then forever my soul would be lost.”
Familiarity can rob us the joy and wonderful of some exciting things. When I was 17, I saw Niagara Falls, and was amazed at the sight and sound of it. The roar of the falls was deafening, and it was difficult to talk to people right beside you. No wonder God describes His voice like “many waters”. Psalm 29:3 says, “The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.” Ezekiel 43:2 says, “…his voice was like a noise of many waters…”.
Awe struck would be the word to describe the sight of being just feet from the edge of the falls. The power of all that water rushing over the edge was memorizing. While I stood dumbfounded, employees of nearby giftshops seemed unimpressed and going about their day as if nothing spectacular or amazing was happening just feet away from the. Familiarity can steal the wonder of somethings that are truly wonderful and awe inspiring.
Sadly, the same thing can happen to believers. We can become so accustomed to grace, mercy, truth, preaching, and the Gospel that it looses its wonder. What a danger this can be!
One preacher said it well, “don’t ever get over the Cross! Nothing thrills my soul like Jesus”.
In Psalm 124, the Psalmist poses the same question, “if it had not been the Lord...”. If we were not on His side, if He were not here to help us, if He were not our God... than all hope would be lost.
I am so thankful that I know the Lord Jesus Christ! If you know the Lord... if you have met Him at Calvary, DON’T ever got over it! Today take time to thank the Lord for Salvation!
