“Don’t always blindly follow guidance and step-by-step instructions; you might run into something interesting.” - Georg Cantor
“Disasters, danger, and disobedience - 3 things that happen when we don’t follow instructions.” - Unknown
For some reason, when we need furniture at our house we end up at Ikea. I enjoy the store, and actually like most of their products, but there is one major drawback… some assembly required! Just recently we purchased a new dresser from Ikea, and I had to set aside an entire day just to get the thing properly assembled and anchored into place. This may be an exaggeration, but not by much, there are literally thousands of pieces in a box of Ikea furniture. One valuable lesson I have learned is follow the instructions closely.
During my teen years, my cousin came to stay with us for a period of time. I will never forget her attempting to put together a desk. We knew we were in trouble when she came down stairs asking if we had a handsaw!
Instructions can make or break a project. The reason they are so important is because the person who made the furniture also provided instructions on how to properly put it together and use it. The manufacture knows best, they made it! We ought not think any different when it comes to mankind. God knows best, because He made us.
Unfortunately, we are unwilling to follow His clear cut instructions most of the time.
Some find the later portions of Exodus tedious and repetitive, but I find these passages awe inspiring. Israel was not know for great obedience, and yet we find them here coming through in glorious fashion. They not only provided more offerings than could be used… so much so that a public announcement had to be made to quite giving offerings (could you imagine that announcement at church)! The work crew, headed by Bezaleel, made everything according to the exact specifications of God. They didn't try to cut corners or get chintzy with God.
How often do we fail in our life to obey God’s exact commands, and suffer the consequences for doing so? Don’t you know that the greatest happiness you could ever experience is simply being what God has called you to be… following the instructions (in the Word of God). Make a commitment today that you will allow God to speak to you, and to the best of your ability (with God’s grace) you will implement and follow what He tells you to do.
