I am very thankful for my heritage, my linage, my pedigree. Some months ago I had the opportunity to trace my family tree back several hundred years. My great great grandfather’s name was General Pugh, how cool is that! I found some interesting tid-bits of information, but nothing that was earth shattering. My grandfather was rough man who loved alcohol, and the Lord saved him. He never was full time in the ministry, but he would itinerate preach and serve in any way possible. My father was called to preach in High School, and is a pastor currently.
I grew up in a pastors home, and was surrounded by godliness my entire life. I am thankful I was put in a place to hear good preaching, whether I wanted to or not. Countless decisions were made for the Lord at a young age in my life, because of the opportunities given to me as a Preacher’s Kid.(PK)
Not everyone has the opportunity to be a PK, but I have learned that has little to do with a person’s ability to serve the Lord. Some of the most faithful servants of the Lord were raised in deplorable situations with ungodly parents.
Some who were raised in the godliest homes decide to live their lives sinfully. Although a home life can have a great impact, it ultimately is the choice of the individual to serve or swerve from the Lord.
Hezekiah was raised in a very perverse and wicked home and environment. His father was an idol worshipper who sacrificed babies to false gods. A home life doesn’t get much worse than that! Hezekiah’s dad, Ahaz, was arguably one of the worst kings in all of Judah’s history.
When Hezekiah became king, he was a right and good king. If Hezekiah hadn’t made some blunders at the end of his life, he could have been considered on the greatest kings of the divided kingdom era! He brought back the Passover, restored the tabernacle, saw national revival that even stretched into the Northern Kingdom. Hezekiah so stirred the people back to God that they, of their own accord tore down the places of worship to the false gods!
I don’t know what you home life was like growing up, and I don’t know who your parents were, but I do know this… God doesn’t make mistakes. You had the parents He wanted you to have, and you grew up in the environment He wanted you to grow up in. If your family was dysfunctional, you are in good company… most of the heroes of the faith came from dysfunctional homes.
Don’t allow your past, heritage, or pedigree determine your future walk with the Lord. It doesn’t matter who you were or where you came from, it doesn’t matter what your surname is, and it doesn’t matter your home life – good or bad. What matters is your choice right now, live for God or not. You have the power to choose who YOU will be.
Dave Ramsey always says that you can change your family tree, and this is true in the spiritual world just as it is in the financial. Your childhood may not have been a spirit filled and spirit led one, but you can choose now to make that kind of home. MAKE A CHOICE, you have the ability and power to decide.

2 Chronicles 30:9
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find compassion before them that lead them captive, so that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.
