“...God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” - 1 Peter 5:5
One of the rudimentary teachings of the Bible is God’s ability to reduce those who are full of pride. Pride is ugly and, in many ways, a root cause of all sin.
In Isaiah 14, one of the most quoted Scriptures about Satan is found. In its prophetic context it has both an immediate and a timeless application. We all know the timeless application, because that is what most preachers use the text for... Satan’s great “I Will” statements that got him thrust from Heaven.
Isaiah’s immediate application had to do with Babylon, and their great prideful “I Will” attitude that resembled that of Satan. As Satan raised himself up against God and was thrown down... so too was Babylon.
In the end, the message for us should be crystal clear, Pride stinks to God.
You may be thinking, “I’m not prideful”, and I would praise you for not stiffening your neck, bowing up and saying “I Will!”. But if we are honest, we have a tendency to have pride. When you go through the day without expressing dependence upon Him, your actions declare, “I got this... I don’t need you... I will.”
It is amazing watching my children think they are big and tough, until they get scared. Nate acts like the big man of the house, but just like any 8 year old he has bad dreams. When he get’s scared, he comes running to mommy and daddy for comfort and protection.
I believe God allows trials and difficulties in our life, if for no other reason, than to teach us dependence upon Him. He makes it so that we run to Him, and declare, “I need you Daddy”! Those who walk in pride are humbled… those who humble themselves receive grace and help. Be humble.
Walk in humility, meekness, and dependence today.
