Just as 1 Chronicles was a historical record chronologically arranged… so too 2 Chronicles continues where 1 Chronicles left off. This book is not only the sequel to 1 Chronicles but also is a companion to 1 & 2 Kings (deals with the same events and time period).
The book begins with the ascension of Solomon to the throne, and ends with the suggestion of Cyrus’ degree for the restoration of the Jew and the rebuilding of the Temple. Throughout its pages, 1 Chronicles does not deal with the Northern Kingdom of Israel, but rather focuses its attention on the Southern Kingdom of Judah. The succession of kings in Judah is followed closely.
The book helps us see the faithfulness of God over a large portion of Israel’s history. We see His loving care for his people in prosperity and judgment. Good kings and bad kings alike enjoyed the care and watchfulness of the LORD, and this book carefully presents the reality of both modes of rulers.
The first 9 chapters deal with Solomon, chapter 10 deals with the divided kingdom, and the last 26 chapters deal with all the other kings of Judah. The book covers a period of about 450 years.
The key chapter of the book is chapter 7, where God promises blessings for those who follow Him, and judgment for those who reject Him.
Enjoy this book that takes us on a historical journey through Judah’s Kings.
